Four Shaman
One morning while staying on the farm where I worked to get the beds ready for Spring, I walked to my bedroom window. Falling asleep in this room, on that land, was soothing to the soul. A waterfall deliciously burbled on the pond just outside my window. That was my chosen view for first and last looks of the day on the farm.
I looked out the window one morning and listened to the civil twilight silence. Blue, slate slabs rounded the pond and sleeping water-lily flowers amongst the floating pads covered the water. As the light dawned, I noticed a big frog seated at one corner of the pond. And then another. Wait, three… four? My eyes travelled around and around looking for more. When it was apparent that there were four frogs in total, I noticed their position and gasped. I stepped back and loosked away from the window because I could not believe what I saw. I re-approached that window and they were still there.
Four frogs, one stationed at each direction of the pond; North, South, East, and West. Like sentries, they sat perfectly poised and postured; looking out and away from each other across the pond's center. It was geometrical. I stood there frozen for as long as I could, knowing that the moment I walked away for too long, they would be gone.
